May festivals - labour day on 1st of May

Hiking in and around Vienna

Hiking in and around Vienna

Vienna’s city hiking trails run for over 500 kilometers, mostly through the Vienna Woods on the edge of the city or through Vienna’s local recreation areas. They are well signed and can be reached by public transport. Service areas, restaurants and heurige along the way invite you to stay awhile, as do benches and tables at particularly attractive viewpoints or on forest meadows.

Vienna Water Trail - The trail runs next to the Upper- and Lower-Old-Danube skimming numerous historic places with the beautiful fauna and flora of the ecosystem. There are also many restaurants on the way.

The Green Prater - When you visit the Green Prater, you are walking on the former imperial hunting ground. The best way is to follow the signs on the 13 kilometer-long City Hiking Trail 9, which takes your directly from Praterstern (U1 Praterstern) away from the main avenue on the level to the little water meadow area at Freudenau.

Bisamberg - Ways to the wine on the edge of the city are offered by the hiking routes on the Bisamberg. One of these routes is the famous City Hiking Trail 5. Walk through old cellar lanes, roam through vineyards and oak woods, and experience interesting and surprising things from the varied history of the region on "educational trails". You might even discover one of the rare orchids that grow here. You set the length of your excursion for yourself. Your "Hiking Companion" guide will help you with this. Hiking companions are available for free at the starting point of your tour in the heurige town of Stammersdorf (brochure stands at the bus stop).

Rundumadum Hiking Trail - The athletic amongst you can tackle the more than 120 kilometer-long Rundumadum Hiking Trail, which encircles the city in 24 easy to manage stages. The starting and end points of each stage can be reached by public transport. Inns and shelters along the way invite you to take a break. Collect confirmation at the five stamping points that you have really walked the "rundumadum" and be rewarded with a hiking pin.

The Viennese Heurige

The Viennese Heurige - They are as famous as the Giant Ferris Wheel, Schönbrunn Palace, the Vienna Boys Choir or the Lipizzaner. A place in which to feel good, in which everyone is warmly welcome. The real Viennese heurige, in which only Viennese wines are served, are identified by a bunch of pine branches and by the word “Ausg’steckt” written on a board, which simultaneously shows when the tavern is open.

Central and Eastern European Film Festival 21-27th March 2017 in Vienna

With 141 films to be shown, the programme of the fifth edition of LET’S CEE 2017 is going to be more wide-ranging than ever before. Austria’s only festival for Central and Eastern European films clearly remains on a growth path.

From March 21st to 27th, 141 feature films, documentaries and short films from Central and Eastern Europe as well as from the Caucasus region and Turkey will be presented at the now fifth LET’S CEE Film Festival, at a total of six venues in Vienna, and, for the first time, at two new venues in Graz and Villach. A new record will be set with a total of 183 screenings. The same goes for the number of guests coming from foreign countries, among which luminaries like directing genius BÉLA TARR from Hungary, movie icons like KSENIJA MARINKOVIĆfrom Croatia, LAZAR RISTOVSKI from Serbia and the two Oscar winners DANIS TANOVIĆ and ASIF KAPADIA will be present. And, of course, the organisers hope to increase the number of visitors once again – the last film festival welcomed just above 15,000. With the LET’S CEE TALENT ACADEMY and the first two-day LET’S CEE INDUSTRY DAYS, the festival has clearly broadened its offer for filmmakers. The only thing that has been reduced is the number of festival days, from nine to seven, however only meaning that there will be more screenings per day.

Within the context of four fierce competitions, a total of 43 Austrian premieres will be taking place, a number of them in the short film competition. As always, all films will be shown solely in the original version with English or German subtitles.

Tickets in the festival week

Available from the 21st-27th of March 2017 on the official LET'S CEE website, oeticket.com, at all Oeticket sales points in Austria,

Best Faschingskrapfen

Our carnival doughnuts (Faschingskrapfen) are a treasured tradition. You will find them in all good local bakeries. They are filled with apricot jam or custard. The best are fluffy with a crispy surface and have a well visible injection hole on the side. (Connoisseurs localise it first and bite straight into it to avoid jam disasters.)

The officially best Faschingskrapfen are produced by bakery chains Groissböck, Felber, and Mann – watch out for those.
